1. Nitin Gadkari lay foundation stones for 16 NH projects in Andhra Pradesh
Nitin Gadkari inaugurated & laid foundation stones for 16 National Highways in Andhra Pradesh on October 16, 2020.
Who is Nitin Gadkari?
Nitin Gadkari is the Union Minister - Minister of Road Transport and Highways.
i) 6-laning of Ranasthalam-Anandapuram section, NH-16.
ii) 4-laning of Kadapa-Mydukur-Kurnool section, NH-40.
Foundation laying projects:
i) 6-lane bypass from 0.00 km - ChinnaAvutupalli to 30.00 km Gollapudi, Vijayawada Bypass Section, NH-16.
ii) Improvement of 36 Nos of stretches on state roads which is under the CRPF scheme.
2. Mission Shakti campaign for women's empowerment
On Saturday, 17.10.2020 Uttar Pradesh's CM Yogi Adityanath launched the Mission Shakti campaign.
Puporse of Mission Shakti Campaign: The main purpose of the campaign would be to organise programmes to train women to become self-reliant and to raise awareness about women's safety and empowerment.
Where will the first campaign be held?
Yogi Adityanath said that to pay homage to the victim of a very unfortunate incident, he decided to kick off the Mission Shakti Campaign from Balrampur.
3. HDFC's profit jumps 18.4% in Sept quarter
HDFC Bank's net profit rose 18.4% to ₹7,513 crore in the July-September period against ₹6,345 crore in the year-ago period.
Increase in the NII: The bank's Net Interest Income - NII rose by 16.7% in the quarter to ₹15,776 crore from previous year's ₹13,515 crore.
4. RBI to conduct 1st state bond auction
Reserve Bank of India - RBI will conduct the first purchase auction of state development loans under Open Market Operations - OMOs for ₹10,000 on October 22.
What is OMO?
An open market operation is an activity by a central bank to give liquidity in its currency to a bank or a group of banks.
According to reports RBI will buy two SDLs each of 15 states and UTs. .
5. Centre extends concessional rate on the cargo movement
The Indian government decided to extend the current concessional rate of 40% discount on the cargo movement between India and Iran’s Chabahar Port for the time period of one year.
The aim: The main objective behind the decision of extension - of the discount period is said to promote trade through Iran’s Shahid Beheshti Port of Chabahar & it will also give a boost to the coastal movement of cargo being handled at Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Deendayal Port from/to Shahid Beheshti Port.
6. Michael Irani appointed as interim President
In accordance with the IWF Constitution and By-laws the IWF Executive Board, Dr Michael Irani has been appointed as the Interim President of the International Weightlifting Federation - IWF. Michael Irani was appointed following the resignation of IWF President Tamás Aján. Prior to this, Michael Irani was serving as the chairman of the IWF Medical Committee.
About Dr Michael Irani : Michael Irani is a leading physician in Rheumatology who works as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Ashford Hospital NHS Trust. He was the former Chairman of the anti-doping Commission of IWF. He was a member of the IWF Medical Committee since 1992.
7. Law Minister virtually hosts 7th Justice Minister’s meeting
On October 16,2020 Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Law Minister virtually hosted the 7th Justice Minister’s meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - SCO member states.
The Meeting was Attened by : Law and Justice Ministers of Pakistan, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic.
Major Topic Discussed in the meeting:
i) The Pro Bono Legal Services in order to provide free legal aid to the marginalized sections of the society.
ii) Tele-law services initiated in 2017 and through which over 3,44,000 free legal consultation has been given to the poor people virtually.
iii) Highlighted the Indian Government's initiatives for providing easy and affordable access to justice for all.
8. “KAPILA” Kalam Program
On 15th October 2020, in honour of 89th birth anniversary of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
Union Education Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal has virtually launched the campaign ‘KAPILA’.
KPILA full form: Kalam Program for Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness campaign.
Objective of "KAPILA":
The government aims to spread awareness through educational programs about the importance of patenting an invention, to lead India towards self-reliance, for that the Ministry has decided to celebrate ‘Intellectual Property Literacy Week’ week from 15 to 23 October.
